The last couple of weeks of the year are always a quiet time for mortgage rates, and last week was no exception, with rates remaining essentially unchanged. Both markets and mortgage companies were closed for the holidays, and there was little in the way of economic data or other events to influence rates.

This Week's Mortgage Rate Forecast:

Rates should remain about the same

Mortgage rates are expected to remain stable this week, with no significant increases or decreases. Most mortgage companies will close early on Tuesday and remain closed on Wednesday for New Year’s Day. Things will return to normal next week, with a week full of labor market data that could pressure rates slightly higher. Enjoy this calm before next week's storm.

What's affecting rates this week:

• New Years: Markets will close early Tuesday and will be closed on Wednesday, as will most mortgage lenders.
• Reduced trading volume: Traders tend to take the last couple of weeks of the year off, resulting in reduced trading volumes that can sometimes cause some fluctuation in day-to-day mortgage rates. However, it is unlikely rates will make any big moves before year-end.
