Last Week's Mortgage Rate Recap:

Rates unchanged

Average mortgage rates were basically unchanged last week, with very little movement from day-to-day, keeping rates near historic lows.

This Week's Mortgage Rate Forecast:

Rates will remain low

Average mortgage rates this week are unlikely to see much movement, at least not until Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaks on Friday at the Jackson Hole symposium. Markets will be listening to Mr. Powell's comments for clues on when the Fed will begin tapering back bond purchases, which have kept mortgage rates at or near record lows since the start of the pandemic. Friday could see some rate volatility depending on what is said and the reaction from investors.

What's affecting rates this week:

  • Economic data: Nothing at the beginning of the week to worry about, but data coming out on Thursday and Friday could have a small effect on mortgage rates.
  • Fed stimulus: The Fed continues to buy Treasuries and mortgage bonds, helping keep mortgage rates low.
  • Jackson Hole symposium: If the Fed makes comments that lead markets to anticipate tapering to happen in Q4 it could cause rates to worsen to end the week. However, if tapering looks more likely in 2021 that could help rates hold these levels or even improve slightly.
